LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, SIOUX FALLS, SD, USA, - ATMIA today released a new research report by a leading UK criminologist on what former ATM criminals think when they target ATMs. The study, entitled “Offences Involving ATMs: Insights into how Offenders see ATMs as Targets” shares the results of interviews with eight ATM offenders, six of whom were involved in some sort of physical attack on the ATM, while two used the ATM as a facilitator of crime. The aim of the research was to highlight their thinking processes as to why ATMs were targeted and their insights on any security measures they may have encountered.

“They say news travels fast in prison,” Mike Lee, CEO of ATMIA, commented. “As an industry we need to share intelligence and data on a global basis and to get smarter in understanding how criminals target our ATMs so we can more effectively combat their specific methods of attack.”

The interviews were conducted during the second quarter on behalf of ATMIA by Professor Martin Gill, a multiple award-winning criminologist, and his team of researchers of Perpetuity Research. They spoke with eight former ATM criminals, whose methods of attack varied. The industry can use the insights to relook at our current security solutions.

The results were shared at ATMIA’s 18th annual security conference which took place on 12-13 June in London.
