· ATMIA US Industry Defense Fund - Established to cover the costs of lobbying various state and federal authorities regarding any proposed legislation which could adversely affect ATM businesses and the industry as a whole.
· International Cardholder Surcharging – ATMIA has been instrumental in passing legislation authorizing surcharging on international cardholders in the following 21 states:
Alabama; Arkansas; California; Colorado; Florida (7/1/08); Georgia: Hawaii (3/31/08); Idaho; Louisiana; Maine; Minnesota; Mississippi; Montana; Nevada; New York; Tennessee; Texas; Utah; Washington; Wisconsin (4/1/08); Wyoming To pursue the International legislative initiative for your state the first step will be to identify appropriate legislators to approach regarding sponsorship—committee assignments/leadership, experience in this substantive area as well caucus membership and leadership will all be factors. The General Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee and the Senate Commerce Committee will most likely be the committees of jurisdiction. Once sponsors are identified in both houses, you/we will work to ensure that the appropriate language/model bill is introduced. The next steps in the process will be to work with relevant committee members to garner their support and understanding for the issues as well as legislative leadership to have the bills reviewed and ultimately released from committee. A similar process will occur when the bills receive consideration by the full Senate and General Assembly.
Here is the New York Bill that passed in July of 2007.
