ATMIA and the ATM Security Association publish an updated version of the Theoretical Cyber ATM Risk Register for the ATM Industry

The ATM Security Association (ASA) and the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) today jointly published an updated version of an industry Risk Register looking at emerging cyber and electronic threats to ATM security.

“There’s a need to stay ahead of the game by anticipating new methods of attack so that innovative solutions can be put in place in time to minimize those changing risks,” explained Mike Lee, CEO of ATMIA and elected serving President of ASA. "Version 2 of the theoretical risk register identifies recent methods of attack occurring in other channels and sectors to assess the probability that they’ll migrate to ATMs.”

This valuable manual, expertly updated by respected international ATM security specialist, Douglas Russell, identifies the skill levels of perpetrators, the technical and technological sophistication involved and the likelihood of risks being realized in the ATM channel. The purpose of this work is to enable all ATM security professionals to be proactive in their strategic approach to combating crime and fraud. Technologies and methods of potential future attacks include electromagnetic pulses (EMPs), radio frequency (RF) jamming devices, fake mobile phone cell or network node, subscriber identity module (SIM) swapping and number porting, to name but a few.
