ATMIA USA executive director and ASA  president, David Tente, was recently invited to join NACS (the National Association of Convenience Stores) for a podcast on the benefits of having an ATM in a convenience store and the threats facing those merchants from ATM crime.  Jeff Lenard, NACS Vice President of Strategic Industry Initiatives hosted the discussion.  The podcast was released yesterday (January 16) and has been distributed through social media.

NACS and its members are also big supporters of cash.  Jeff referenced their internal studies showing that even 20% of gas purchases are consistently made with cash.  Next Gen ATMs and Universal Cash Deposits were two of the ATMIA  initiatives described by David that could be of significant benefit to C-stores in the near future.

Small retailers, such as convenience stores, are getting hit particularly hard by recent increases in ATM crime.  David reviewed a few simple best practices that can help mitigate physical attacks in a retail location.  Although ATM skimming has declined significantly in the U.S., card skimming at fuel dispensers is still a major problem.

Many convenience stores are small businesses (less than 10 employees/staff) and qualify for very low membership rates at ATMIA and ASA.  Access to ASA security best practices and the ATM crime database may be of particular interest.
