Grass roots activity in the effort to require that consumers have the right to pay with cash continues to be very strong. Over the past two years, 27 states have introduced consumer payment choice bills. With the new year, comes a new round of local efforts to require cash acceptance in a retail environment. The states of Florida, Missouri, and New York have already pre-filed or introduced new cash measures.

Although the House passed the Payment Choice Act two years ago, it was never taken up by the Senate. There is some hope that it will be introduced this again this year and garner strong bipartisan support.
