Commonwealth Bank Employees Celebrate 100 Years of Giving by Donating $10 Million to Australian Community Organisations

by Commonwealth Bank of Australia

The Canberra Hospital Foundation will be one of the first to receive a Centenary Grant as part of a nationwide roll-out of 1,000 grants by bank employees to local community groups.

In celebration of a 100-year legacy of giving, Commonwealth Bank employees will give $10 million to community organisations this summer, with 1,000 Centenary Grants valued at $10,000 each set to be distributed from today.

The Canberra Hospital Foundation will be one of the first stops in a nationwide roll-out of grants to organisations chosen by local bank employees. The foundation will receive $100,000, having been nominated by ten Commonwealth Bank branches in Canberra in recognition of the much-needed services it provides to the local community.

Funding for the Centenary Grants program is being provided by the CommBank Foundation’s employee giving program, which has been supporting Australians in need since 1917. More than 13,000 current and retired bank employees donate a portion of their income to the program, with each contribution matched dollar-for-dollar by the bank.

The far-reaching impact of the work undertaken by the Canberra Hospital Foundation, and support for women and children in the ACT, was a crucial factor in it receiving the grant.

Commonwealth Bank Regional General Manager NSW and ACT, Sara Sutton, says: “Our employees have been generously giving since 1917 and to recognise their contributions, we’re proud to partner with the CommBank Foundation to provide 1,000 Centenary Grants in local communities across the country.”

“We’re thrilled to be able to mark the launch of the Centenary Grants at the Canberra Hospital Foundation, and support the important work they do helping provide world-class care for patients and their families.

“It’s especially meaningful that our branches and employees in Canberra are able to decide which organisation should receive a Centenary Grant within their local community.”

ACT Health Executive Director Women, Youth and Children, Elizabeth Chatham says: “This generous donation will provide a significant impact at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.”

“The funding will support the purchase of monitoring, medical and resuscitation equipment for babies, children and adolescents. We are extremely grateful to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia for their support in this area.”

Right across Australia this summer, Commonwealth Bank employees will be supporting local organisations that benefit youth wellbeing, access to education, and cancer research and awareness.
