Hacker exposes source code for El Salvador bitcoin ATMs

A hacker recently exposed the source code of El Salvador's government Chivo bitcoin ATMs. This is the only the latest in a string of hacks in the country, such as earlier this month when a hacker published more than 5 million photos and contact information of almost every adult in El Salvador, according to a report by Protos.

The hacked source code included .exe, .txt, .bat and .reg files for the software of the ATMs. This hacker group known as CiberInteligenciaSV has also been publishing leaked data on Salvadorans, including 800,000 license plates, 96,000 pregnancy records and more.

In 2021, President Nayib Bukele signed a bill making bitcoin legal tender and has been steadily working to increase bitcoin acceptance in the country.

Chivo previously worked with Athena Bitcoin Global, which was sued by third party contractors over alleged failure to pay.
