Metabase Q Inc., a Latin American security organization TV announced the company's security research division, Ocelot, discovered a new variant of Ploutus, one of the most sophisticated ATM malware families worldwide, according to a report in Finextra.

Ploutus was discovered in 2013 and allows criminals to empty an ATM by taking advantage of ATM middleware vulnerabilities via an externally connected device. This new variant, named Ploutus-I, can control ATMs from Brazilian vendor Itautec. Already, there have been additional reports of ATM attacks in the region.

Cyberattacks on ATMs are a concern for many financial institutions due to the growing complexity of the malware.
