In order to contribute to clarifying the impact of the new Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the consumption habits of the Portuguese, on the economy and society in general, SIBS publishes, through SIBS Analytics, a set of indicators on the evolution of consumption in the Época de Christmas 2021, in Portugal, compared to similar periods.
The most recent data from SIBS Analytics reveal that consumption in Portugal, in December 2021, recovered compared to previous years, with an increase in total purchases (physical and online) of +26% compared to 2020 and, already +19% compared to 2019, in the pre-pandemic period.
It should also be noted that the Portuguese favored the MB WAY service as a form of payment for their Christmas purchases, a notable trend both in physical purchases and in online purchases. In the last month of December, in-store payments via mobile phone through the MB WAY service grew 10x compared to the same period of 2019 and online purchases recorded an increase of 6x over the same period, in both cases more than doubling compared to 2020. MB WAY ends 2021 with more than 3.7 million users and more than 25 million operations per month.
