2020 STATE GOVERNMENT RESPONSES TO COVID-19

STATE AND LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS

CALIFORNIA

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment will accept comments until March 16 regarding proposed changes to the amendments regarding Proposition 65 warning requirements addressing responsibility to provide consumer product exposure warnings.

The Assembly Committee on Education will hold a public hearing March 18 regarding AB 1995, which requires a school district or county superintendent of schools maintaining a kindergarten or any of grades 1 to 12, inclusive, to provide a free meal to a pupil who is eligible to receive a reduced-priced meal.

CONNECTICUT

The Joint Committee on Banking will hold a public hearing March 16 regarding SB 25, which establishes the State Infrastructure Bank and public-private partnerships for state-funded infrastructure improvement projects.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

The Committee of the Whole will meet March 17 to consider a series of ordinances meant to provide relief to both City residents and businesses negatively impacted by the Coronavirus outbreak. One ordinance protects residents from utility shutoffs and evictions when the failure to pay is due to either illness or lack of pay caused by a Coronavirus-related work stoppage. Another ordinance grants funds to affected small businesses.

IOWA

The Labor Services Division will accept comments until March 18 regarding proposed amendments to a rule to update the financial penalties for receiving an occupational safety and health citation.

MARYLAND

The deadline for each chamber to pass bills originating in its chamber is March 16.

The Legislature will adjourn sine die March 18. This adjournment comes two weeks early due to COVID-19.

The Senate Finance Committee will hold a public hearing March 17 regarding SB 1032, which modifies the renewable portfolio standard and eligible resources, raising the maximum capacity of small hydroelectric power plants to 60 megawatts for Tier 1 renewable resources.

MINNESOTA

The deadline for each chamber to pass bills originating in its chamber is March 20.

OHIO

The Department of Health will accept comments until March 17 and hold a public hearing March 19 regarding proposed rule amendments and new rules updating the regulations governing the use of radioactive material for medical use.

OREGON

The Department of Human Services will accept comments until March 20 regarding proposed amendments to self-sufficiency program rules impacting the SNAP program.

TENNESSEE

The Senate Commerce and Labor Committee will hold a public hearing March 17 regarding SB 1892, which mandates that a health insurance entity will reimburse a facility hosting a patient as part of a telehealth encounter an originating site fee in accordance with applicable rules and amounts established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

WASHINGTON

The Seattle City Council will meet March 16 to take immediate action on an ordinance amending Sections 14.16.010 and 14.16.030 of the Municipal Code to strengthen and clarify labor standards for paid sick and paid safety leave for employees working in the City. The Ordinance would also declare an emergency and establish an immediate effective date.

Stephanie Obieroma

Legislative Associate

 

Prior to joining Stateside, Stephanie was a Policy Analyst Fellow in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Department of Defense. She also worked in the Kentucky General Assembly as a Legislative Intern for Representative George Brown, Jr. Stephanie is a graduate of Georgetown University, where she received a Master of Arts in American Government. Stephanie is also a cum laude graduate of the University of Kentucky, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in International Studies.

 

Where do you call home? My home is Springfield, Illinois, the Land of Lincoln.

How long have you worked at Stateside? I have worked at Stateside since October 2019.

What’s your favorite podcast? Right now, I love listening to No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis. She interviews female CEOs, fashion designers, authors and directors on how they have risen to the top of their fields. The podcast inspires me to be my own girl boss in my career.

What’s one thing on your bucket list? I have never been out of the country, so my dream is to travel throughout Europe and the United Kingdom! The Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium and Poland are high on my list!!!
