Girls across the Nordics find the technology and ICT industry boring and complicated, which does not bode well for meeting the challenge of the shortage of experts in the field. To counter this lack of talent, Tietoevry launches the guidebook “Being an IT girl”. The booklet provides girls aged 15-18 with practical insights into the industry and its variety of job roles and possible career paths. The aim is to lower the barrier for selecting tech/ICT as a field of study and profession.

The Nordic technology and ICT industry is in the midst of a talent shortage. At the same time, a Tietoevry survey from the spring revealed that girls find the technology/ICT industry boring and complicated. Due to the industry imbalance in gender ratio, there is eg. a risk of harmful biases in IT solutions.

“The industry challenge is our challenge. We decided that we need to do our part in attracting and retaining women to, and in, the tech/ICT industry. In order to do this, the pool of applicants needs to be more balanced in terms of gender ratio,” says Tietoevry Head of Talent Acquisition Anna Gulliksen. “A further incentive for us is our 50/50 gender balance diversity goal. This booklet is one concrete action to drive this.”

Launched today, the Tietoevry booklet “Being an IT Girl” is targeted at girls of the age 15-18 and their parents. With the aim of lowering the barrier for selecting tech/ICT as a field of study and work, the booklet outlines key industry areas, job roles and career paths from a practical point of view. It also presents career stories of Nordic women in Tietoevry across different job roles. The aim is to show the variety of roles the IT business offers and how interesting and fun an education and career in IT can be.

“We wanted to demonstrate that technology and ICT is a much broader thing than writing code and excelling in math. Creativity, problem solving, teamwork and curiosity are also important. Indeed, one can work in the industry perfectly well without ever doing actual coding,” Gulliksen says. “Another important aspect is that, as tech is everywhere, a career in the field provides opportunities to make a difference and change the world – for good.”
