Welcome to the First Edition
A note from Mike Lee, CEO of ATMIA and Chairperson of the Consortium for Next Gen ATMs:
Right now, many are distracted and concerned about the deepening health crisis caused by the new coronavirus outbreak. This is only natural, especially when panic reactions can cause additional financial and economic damage. And, yet, there is surely hope in the midst of all of this uncertainty.
Firstly, the one certainty is that this epidemic will peak at some stage (although we don’t yet know when). Everything happens in cycles and all previous epidemics have peaked and then were brought under control so that normal life could resume.
Secondly, a lot of work can be successfully carried out, while the epidemic is underway, both on digital platforms and in the real world when the simple, recommended precautions are taken. Isn’t this an ideal time to take stock, do some re-thinking and to continue to build a better future? A focus on work for the future takes our thoughts away for a time on the pressing problems of the present: a welcome psychological relief.
The global future-proofing exercise being driven by the Consortium for Next Gen ATMs is a good case in point. The state of play is that our required three month public consultation period has just been completed for the approved Implementation Guide 1.0, which incorporates the signed-off architectural blueprint version 1.5 and includes a draft standard API for Next Gen ATMs. In addition, Proofs of Concept have been conducted by our trusted technical advisor, Marcel Ficken, and the results published here. In addition, we're about to start building an online self-certification system. The plan has been drafted and will soon be submitted for approval by the project’s steering committee, the Standards, Technical & Governance Committee. Once the online system has been tested and goes live, we can await news of the world’s first official certified Next Gen ATM – a true milestone for the global ATM industry. Finally, we are aiming for End-to-End security for the new architecture and Douglas Russell, our top security advisor, is developing best practices for app security and mobile devices as well as a matrix of threats the new architecture will face. The consensus on this project is that the reinvented Next Gen ATM will represent a more secure ecosystem for ATMs than the current Card and PIN model for ATM transactions. It will also create much richer, faster and better ATM customer experiences.
Imagine if our industry can achieve together this remarkable world first in 2020, right in the midst of the adversity humanity is currently facing? Wouldn’t that be a shining light to brighten the tone of bad news we’re constantly exposed to during this epidemic? I, for one, have faith in our industry to rise up together to make a statement about our hope for the future.
Warm Regards,
Mike Lee

2020: The Year of our Future
2020 should turn out to be a historic year for the whole ATM industry. That’s due in part to the likelihood that the first certified Next Gen ATM will be installed somewhere in the world. I hope to be there when that happens to pay tribute to the innovators who will make history, thanking those key individuals who have been the driving forces of Next Gen ATMs.

Pre-Register for Next-Gen ATMIA Self-Certification
The ATMIA Next Gen ATMs project will soon start developing an online Next Gen ATMIA Self-Certification System. The certification system is being designed by Marcel Ficken, the project’s Technical Advisor. It will be modular and multi-layered like EMVco and Scheme Certifications, with the following layers:
|
|
- Level 1 = End-Point Layer : Hardware (ATM and COD)
- Level-2 = End-Point Layer: Software API between ATM and ATM-APP / COD-APP
- Level-3 = Online API between End-Point Device layer and APP Service Layer
- Level-4 = Online API between APP service Layer and INFRA Layer
- ATM channel Level = All Levels for End-2-End flow through multiple layers.
By pre-registering, which is free, you will be the first to be notified when the certifications are ready. Pricing will also be set at that time and pre-registering does not commit your company to the program.
