| Across emerging markets, ATMs are a critical channel for financial inclusion, extending access to cash and banking services to communities where traditional branch infrastructure may be limited. In many markets, cash remains central to everyday economic activity, making reliable access to ATMs an important part of expanding financial services. As ATM networks expand into new and often more remote locations, security becomes increasingly important. ATMs and the cash used to replenish them face a range of threats, from physical attacks and cash-in-transit robbery to increasingly sophisticated attacks on ATM systems. The impact of an attack can go far beyond the immediate cash loss. An ATM may be unavailable for an extended period, servicing higher-risk locations can become more difficult, and operators may ultimately reconsider deployments where the security risk becomes unsustainable. This session looks at the security challenges facing banks and ATM operators across emerging markets and why protecting cash infrastructure is essential to sustainable financial inclusion. It will consider the importance of protecting the cash itself, including the role of Intelligent Banknote Neutralisation Systems (IBNS), and how banks, central banks, ATM operators and cash-in-transit providers can help create secure, resilient ATM networks that continue to serve the communities that depend on them. |
