Combatting The Rise of ATM Theft With 3SI's ATM Tracker™

It was early on a Saturday morning when police in Mesquite, Texas, received alerts that an ATM in their area was on the move and tracking slowly away from the branch. Fortunately, the branch had installed a 3SI ATM Tracker™ in this particular machine. Patrol units in the area quickly responded and discovered that the entire ATM had been removed from the branch. Using information from the tracker, police immediately set up a perimeter around the area.

When the tracker became stationary not far from the branch, police moved in. The ATM was recovered along with a construction vehicle and a forklift which had been stolen from a nearby public works project and used to remove the ATM from the branch.

After a short period of time, the suspect was located. When he was initially questioned, he claimed that his vehicle had been stolen, and he had been out looking for it during the time of the crime. Patrol officers detained the suspect and held him until investigators could arrive. During the interrogation by the lead investigator, the suspect let it slip that he had been a fork lift mechanic and had knowledge of how to start a fork lift without a key. The suspect finally admitted that he stole the fork lift and the ATM. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of felony theft.

The ATM and all of its contents, valued at $122,080, were returned to the bank. A successful morning for the Mesquite Police Department!

ATMIA Working Committees

As our ATM world changes due to reasons such as IT,hardware, regulatory, fraud, operator changes, etc. ATMIA is continually ramping up or winding down committees as necessary to keep its members well informed of impending changes. Committees are made up of a cross section of members and subject matter experts. The work effort on behalf of committee members is minimal but of high caliber. Please take a look at the existing working committees to see if you are interested in becoming involved to guide change. https://www.atmia.com/committees/

Commemorative Bank Note to Mark the Historic Reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The Government of Canada has announced that the Bank of Canada will issue a commemorative bank note to mark the historic reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The note will be publicly unveiled and issued this fall and will be a variation of the existing $20 note. It will have the same level of security as all other notes in the Polymer series.

The Bank will issue 40 million commemorative notes, which will be distributed through Canada's financial institutions. To put this in perspective, there are over 800 million $20 notes in circulation. The current $20 note will continue to represent the vast majority of $20s in circulation for the life of the Polymer series.

When the note is unveiled in the fall, the Bank will communicate more extensively with various stakeholders and the public. We will conduct an on-line communications campaign to raise awareness so that the note will be recognized and accepted in cash transactions. As we get close to that time, I will reach out to you to share additional details and discuss communication opportunities.
