ATMIA & KAHUNA RELEASE FUTURE OF ATM INTERCHANGE WHITE PAPER

Independent ATM deployers (IADs) throughout the United States have seen ATM-transaction revenue steadily decline over the last 10 years. Market saturation, increasing competition with surcharge-free ATM networks, cash-back debit options and increasing operational expenses resulting from more stringent regulatory and security mandates have all taken their toll.

But perhaps the biggest threat to the infrastructure of retail, off-premise ATMs in the U.S. has been fluctuating interchange fees – fluctuations that have not worked in the IAD's favor.

To help address IAD concerns about interchange, ATMIA and Kahuna have produced a new white paper, The Future of ATM Interchange, which explores options to prevent further reductions of interchange in the U.S. ATMIA and Kahuna's recent survey found that reduction in interchange was the number one concern of U.S.-based IADs.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GLOBAL PAYMENT NETWORKS, REGARDING THE NEED FOR A REALISTIC AND CONSISTENT ATM ROADMAP FOR EMV MIGRATION IN THE U.S.

Even though EMV migration will impact all retail transaction types, clearly, most of the industry attention is currently focused on merchants and retail point-of-sale. This is an oversight because ATMs account for hundreds of millions of cash withdrawal transactions every month.

Two of the Payment Networks have already offered to share chip application technology, in an effort to help resolve issues brought about by Durbin routing requirements and to speed up testing and certification processes. Even if the industry accepts this approach, a deliverable POS market solution is months away. And yet, the first liability shift for retail EMV transactions takes place in less than 45 days. What's even more unfathomable is that this liability shift is for ATMs - even though ATMs have been largely overlooked, so far, in cross-industry discussions.
