By now, I am certain that all have seen a lot of the promotions and information for the 2026 U.S. conference in Arlington, TX. The theme of that event is of particular interest to me, as I have to wonder if it might be a six-word summary of our industry’s future – The Super ATM: Facilitating Market Convergence.

It would appear that the Federal Reserve coined the “Super ATM” tag in an article published about one year ago. The piece referenced pilot projects in the UK aimed at increasing access to banking services in areas that had been abandoned by full-service bank branches. That trend is not only impacting small businesses, but consumers, as well. The pilot projects employed a new type of ATM that was not only a recycler, but also capable of accepting deposits and facilitating money transfers.

The bank branch count in the U.S. peaked at 82,965 in 2012. Despite an 8% increase in population, the number of branches declined to 69,996 in 2023 – about 16%. Consumers are resolving that issue by dramatically increasing the value of their withdrawals. Small businesses, though, are left to seek out less convenient banking options.

Enter, the “Super ATM”. These are not ITMs (Interactive Teller Machines) which require the participation of a remote teller. They are a more sophisticated self-service terminal. Small businesses can make deposits and transfer funds without the assistance of a teller. Likewise, consumers can withdraw cash, make deposits, and pay bills, dramatically reducing the need to visit a full-service branch.

Considering the significant impact that “smart-safes” have had on the cost of handling cash, the promise of even greater efficiencies with Super ATMs should be welcomed by all. Want to learn more?  Then don’t miss the ATMIA U.S. conference and expo in Arlington, Texas, February 10 – 12, 2026.

Best regards to all.
David
