On July 31, 1967, NatWest Chairman Duncan Stirling made the first ever withdrawal from the first-ever NatWest ATM at the bank's Victorian branch in London.

Stirling's cash withdrawal of 10 pounds in 1967 would be equivalent to 171 pounds (about $225) today.

So, to mark the 50th anniversary of this event, NatWest decided to that the current machine at its Victorian branch should randomly dispense an extra 171 pounds to lucky customers throughout the day on July 31, according to a report by Finextra.

The NatWest promotion was a definite one-up on Barclays. To celebrate its June 27, 1967, inauguration of the world's first-ever ATM at its Enfield branch, Barclays simply dressed up the current ATM at that location with a coat of gold paint.
