Industry News
Europe:
Despite predictions of a cashless society, cash usage in the UK has risen for the third consecutive year. Nationwide, the country's largest building society, reported a 4.6% increase in ATM withdrawals in 2024 compared to 2023, with nearly 33 million withdrawals. This resurgence is attributed to consumers seeking better budgeting methods amid high living costs and the closure of bank branches.
Emerging Markets:
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced new measures to address ongoing cash shortages at ATMs across the country. CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso stated that starting December 1, 2024, customers are encouraged to report any difficulties with withdrawing cash from bank branches or ATMs directly to the CBN. Financial institutions found engaging in malpractices or sabotage will face severe penalties. The CBN aims to maintain a robust cash offering to meet the country's needs, particularly during high-demand periods such as the festive season and year-end.
