The Thai Banker's Association has announced that its 15 member banks will waive ATM fees for citizens traveling from across Thailand to Bangkok to pay their respects to King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who ruled the nation for 70 years until his death on Oct. 13 at age 88.
Thailand's ATM system is arranged in clearing regions, with banks in one clearing region charging customers a fee to use an ATM in another clearing region — even if both ATMs are owned by the same bank, a report by the Bangkok Post said.
Fees will be waived through Jan.3, and travelers have been assured that ATMs near the palace in Bangkok will be continuously stocked with cash.
