ATM Crime Alert: Emerging Threats, Changing Trends and How You Can Help
Wednesday, October 21, 2026
As of October 19, 2026, ATMIA’s Crisis & Crime Management Intelligence System (CCMIS) recorded 65,217 ATM crime incidents from 4,119 reports. Behind those numbers are evolving threats that make staying informed—and reporting every incident—more important than ever.
Over the past six months, fraud has remained the most common type of ATM crime in the United States, with skimming and card data compromise accounting for 94.1% of all reported criminal activity. Meanwhile, ATM thefts continue to occur in larger cities, but many incidents go unreported, leaving gaps in the industry's understanding of the threat.
There is some encouraging news: dispenser jackpotting has declined to approximately 1.2% of reported attacks. However, another threat is gaining attention in the United States—cash trapping. Although it is the most common type of ATM fraud globally, many people are unfamiliar with how it works. Criminals use a device to prevent dispensed cash from reaching the consumer, allowing them to retrieve the money instead. Regular ATM inspections can help identify and prevent these attacks.
See ATM Crime? Report It. Help Protect the Industry.
Every unreported ATM crime leaves a gap in our understanding of the threats facing the industry. Whether it’s skimming, cash trapping, jackpotting or ATM theft, your report can help reveal patterns, identify emerging threats and give others the information they need to better protect their ATMs and customers.
Don’t assume someone else has reported it. Take action. ATMIA members and non-members can report an ATM crime incident through the CCMIS. Reports can be submitted anonymously, protecting both your identity and the exact location of the incident.
The more incidents we capture, the clearer the picture becomes. Help turn individual reports into industry-wide intelligence. Report every incident.
