ATM global crime database houses over 53,000 reported incidents
Wednesday, January 21, 2026
As of the end of December, the CCMIS (Crisis & Crime Management intelligence System) contained 53,756 incidents of ATM crime from 3,983 reports. Fraud has overtaken physical attacks as the most common type of ATM crime in the U.S. this year, with some form of jackpotting/cash-out attacks at 72% of all criminal activity. Skimming and Card Data Compromise is a distant second at 20%. Physical attacks accounted for most of the remaining activity.
Although Cash Trapping is the most common type of fraud globally, we have seen very little of it in the U.S. – until this year. In fact, many have no idea what cash trapping is. Simply put, it is a simple device that hides the dispensed cash from the consumer, so the thief can collect it. Frequent inspection of the ATM is recommended to help thwart such attacks.
If you know about an ATM crime incident, let others know, too. All ATMIA members have complete access to the crime database and security best practices. ATM crime incidents can be reported anonymously – anonymity of the exact location of the crime, as well as the crime reporter.
Not sure how to report your incident? Go to the ATMIA Resource Library and search for “crime webinar” to learn how to create an alias, search the database, and analyze crime trends.
