ASA (the ATM Security Association) and ATMIA (the ATM Industry Association) are pleased to announce the publication of their “Prevention of Skimming & Card Data Compromise Best Practices, Version 3”. The first release of this important document was in 2009, followed by an update in 2016. Skimming continues to be a serious threat to the ATM industry and consumers who rely on ATMs for convenient access to cash.

Publication of this critical update is very timely. Even just two years ago, fraud was only about 20% of all ATM attacks in the U.S. It has grown significantly and so far this year is 50% of all attacks. And 69% of those fraud attacks are skimming or card data compromise.

“This Best Practices is one of many valuable resources available to ASA subscribers,” says David Tente, President of the ASA. “Along with access to the CCMIS, the industry’s only global ATM crime database, it gives our members and law enforcement tools that they need to battle a continuing threat.”

The CCMIS (Crisis & Crime Data Management System) was launched in May of 2021. It currently holds over 3,500 ATM crime reports with nearly 30,000 individual incidents. Those reports have come in from 58 different countries over the past 3 years. The ASA provides complimentary access to any law enforcement agency that is involved in ATM or financial related crime investigations. Currently that includes the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI, Europol, multiple local police departments, and many state/provincial financial crime task forces.
