ATMIA Releases New India IAD Market Study Highlighting the Critical Role of White Label ATM Operators
Wednesday, January 14, 2026

The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) has released a new in-depth report, The ATMIA India National IAD Study, offering a timely and rigorous examination of India’s rapidly evolving payments landscape and the critical role played by Independent ATM Deployers (IADs), known locally as White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs).

As India continues to experience extraordinary growth in digital payments alongside sustained and expanding cash usage, the study challenges simplistic narratives surrounding the decline of cash. Instead, it highlights the necessity for multiple payment channels to coexist to support economic resilience, consumer choice, and financial inclusion.
The report explores how regulatory frameworks, interchange economics, operational costs, and technological innovation are shaping the sustainability of the WLAO sector. Drawing on market data and industry insight, the study provides a comprehensive analysis of the pressures facing operators, as well as the opportunities emerging from transaction growth, evolving regulation, and innovation beyond traditional cash dispensing.
A key focus of the study is the vital role WLAOs play in extending access to cash in underserved Tier 3 and Tier 4 regions across India. These operators are shown to be essential to maintaining last-mile access to financial services, supporting local economies, and advancing national financial inclusion objectives.
“India offers one of the clearest real-world examples of how cash and digital payments can—and must—coexist,” said Lonnie C. Talbert, ATMIA CEO. “This study demonstrates that WLAOs are not only sustaining access to cash today but are also well positioned to evolve through innovation and expanded services as the payments ecosystem continues to transform.”
While the report focuses on India, its findings have global relevance. The lessons identified provide valuable insights for policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, and ATM operators worldwide who are grappling with how to maintain resilient cash infrastructure amid accelerating digital transformation.
The India IAD National Study is now available for purchase by both ATMIA members and non-members.
