2018 EMV Migration Survey

The fourth and final ATM channel EMV migration survey conducted by ATMIA is now complete and a report on the results is available to all ATMIA members.

The first survey was completed in April. 2013 and focused on how prepared ATM operators were for the Maestro liability shift.  The subsequent two surveys, completed in 2014 and 2016, sought to measure how much progress had been made in key aspects of planning and executing the industry’s migration to EMV.  By the beginning of 2016, 90% of ATM operators had begun purchasing upgrade components and replacement ATMs and about 19% of ATMs were actively accepting EMV transactions.

With all ATM-channel liability shifts now behind us, the primary objective of the final survey was to assess how complete EMV migration is in the ATM channel.  And at the same time, seek feedback on what challenges ATM operators face in a post-migration environment.  Reports from ATM operators, both financial institutions and independents, indicate that problems with card readers and the chip cards themselves are not uncommon.  Other questions address potential issues with misrouted transactions, fallback, and fraud resolution.

The survey also looks ahead, questioning respondents about their plans for deployment of NFC technology, cardless solutions, biometrics, and other new ATM functionality.  Respondents were given an opportunity to submit open-ended comments – which are included at the end of each section.
