Amazon has been trialling a new retail experience, ‘Amazon Go’. This purports to eliminate the need to wait in line, one just swipes into the store, grabs their items and leaves. The shopping basket total is automatically debited from the user’s payment details.
This concept has been seen as the ‘white whale’ of retailing for many years, with earlier attempts failing due to cost/technology restrictions. By blending technology from Amazon’s self-driving car programme and contactless payment technology, Amazon feel it is now possible to track a shopper and their activities in store with enough accuracy to plan for opening 2000 stores over the next few years.
