Champions of Payment Freedom: ATMIA Pushes for Reliable, Secure Access for All

As we begin 2024, the ATM industry faces an important year ahead. Building on the momentum of last year, ATMIA looks forward to continuing to advocate strongly at all levels for the importance of a reliable and secure payment system that is accessible to all consumers and provides them with choice. Late last year, we saw positive signs from the Federal Government, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers committed to developing a national plan to ensure that cash can continue to be used to make payments. While details for this commitment have not yet been released, the clear intention of the Treasurer to keep cash in the payment system is an essential first step in seeing decisive action on securing cash. ATMIA will closely monitor this development in 2024.

ATMIA has also strongly advocated with significant businesses to keep cash as a payment method. We wrote to over 20 retail outlets late last year, highlighting the importance of cash to their business operations and millions of their consumers. There are several items we will continue to follow and address at our Strategic Direction forum in 2024:

• Senate Enquiry to Bank Closure in Regional Australia – due to be released in May ‘24
• Treasury review of Australia’s Payment System – ATMIA will be monitored
• NSW Cashless Pokier machines- program to start in a 2024-expected report to the NSW Government in November ’24
