Rejected By Voters – Ban Fails!

It's been an incredibly busy and productive period for ATMIA in the Asia Pacific region.

The NSW state election saw the proposal to completely ban the use of cash at poker machines rejected by voters. While the Minns Government has not entirely ruled out cash bans at poker machines this is certainly a better outcome than a complete ban on the use of cash, depriving consumers of choice. The Minns government has indicated that it will oversee a trial on a targeted number of poker machines to access the effectiveness of any such ban.

Additionally, with a number of important Government inquiries into cash and the payment system underway, ATMIA has produced a Position Paper on Cash in the Digital Age and the effect of the Regional Banking closure.

ATMIAs submission has been accepted for publication from the Senate standing committee on Rural and regional affairs and Transport. To view click here.

During this period, there has been significant media interest, and I would like to thank the Cash Welcome Group for their support in this area.

Moving forward, earlier this month ATMIA held our first Strategic Direction Forum, this is an open discussion for our members and guests to address relevant industry issues in this region. A special thank you to Senator Linda White for sharing her insights to what the committee is looking for.

Some outcomes from the forum includes:

  • ATMIA to reach out to Senator Linda White for a progress report on the Inquiry Bank closure in regional areas before the reporting time in December.
  • ATMIA will contact the NSW Government for a progress report on the existing trial regarding cashless gaming cards at the designated venues that are live and whether they can share any insight on some lessons they’ve learned.

ATMIA will share further details with our members in due course.

A gentle reminder to our all industry stakeholders of ATMIAs upcoming industry events in 2023:

Both these events will bring together industry experts and end-users to connect and discuss new and emerging technologies throughout the industry. We encourage you all to visit our website for further information.

As always, ATMIAs membership team is here to help if you need any assistance, so don’t hesitate to reach out via email or contact me on 0424 300 660.

Cheers,
Sandra Smith
